The functional role of human γδ T cells in tissues is poorly understood and has been largely limited to peripheral blood studies. Gray et al. characterized human γδ T cells in the blood and various mucosal and lymphoid tissues from nearly 200 donors ranging in age from a few days to over 80 years. Adult γδ T cell populations were highly differentiated and cytotoxic, whereas γδ T cells from infants and children were clonally diverse, tissue specific, and exhibited tissue repair functions and features of adaptive lymphocytes.
